Conversation [From Temporary Staff to Executive of Giant Company in 10 Years. What We Can Learn from Success Stories] Hideki Ninomiya, Representative Director, Orient Corporation, and Jun Fukuda, Consultant

My friend Nino-san (Hideki Ninomiya) has published a book about his life, titled “A Small Success Rule: How I, a Temporary Employee, Became an Executive of a Giant Group Company at the Age of 34” (Diamond Inc.).

In this book, he graduated from high school and went to the U.S. to become a musician, but failed and returned to Japan. He then joined Otsuka Pharmaceutical as a temporary help desk worker, and the book describes his success story of how he rose through the ranks to become an executive within 10 years.

Read our conversation with Nino, who is currently running a company that protects corporate security and is doing very well.

Ninomiya: “Attacks in which companies are hacked from outside are becoming very problematic now. Unlike in the past, it is not done by a criminal who wants to show off his abilities, but by a professional cyber-terrorist group that does it because it is more profitable than conventional crimes with lower risk and higher return.

In Europe and the U.S., personal information has been leaked and the amount of damage is as large as tens of billions of yen. So-called “IT” has become a part of business risk management before we know it. In Japan, however, we still only talk about localized technical how-tos, such as “where is the hole” or “tools that work against viruses. This makes it difficult for management to understand how much a company has the ability to protect itself.

That is why I am working to convey the realities of who is committing cyber crimes around the world and for what purpose (why), while conveying the attitude and response that companies should have in order to confront these crimes from a business perspective as much as possible.”
