A Small World, Big World Balance
How to big worlds and small worlds live simultaneously? We have a small world in which we want to find happiness in ourselves.
However, this small world is bound to intersect with the larger world (like a secular dystopia),
We live in the small and big world simultaneously, unable to forget them both.
– From an interview of Kazuo Ihiguro about the novel, “Remains of the Day.”
*Dystopia is the opposite world of Utopia.
Everyday is not the same. The sunset in Tamagusuku in Shimajiri District in Okinawa shows us a different expression everyday. Humans cannot rule over nature. We can only bite down and compromise as we think about our small worlds inside of this big one.
And then, with the senses of the smaller world, I want to lessen the sharpness of the bigger world.
The Remains of the day.
“One of the things interested me always is how we live in small world and big world at the same time. We have a personal arena in which we have to try and find fulfillment and love.”
But that inevitably intersects with larger world, where politics, or even dystopian universes prevail. We live in small world and big world at the same time and we can’t forget one or the other.” – Kazuo Ihiguro
