今回、ニューヨークに来た目的はいくつかあるが、その中でもアリシア・キースと旦那さんで音楽プロデューサーのSwizz Beatz（カシーム・ディーン）のアートコレクション展示「Giants」（ジャイアンツ）を、Brooklyn Museumで見られることが一番の楽しみだった。
彼らのDean Collection（ディーン・コレクション）は「アーティストがアーティストを支援する」という理念を持っている。特に黒人ディアスポラ（アフリカ大陸から強制的に連行されたアフリカ系の人々とその子孫を指す）のアーティストに焦点を当てている。
「Giants」のコンセプトは、「最も巨大な自分になる必要がある： 最も巨大な思考をし、可能な限り大きな方法で自分自身を表現し、巨人であることを自分自身に許すこと。」
展示には、ゴードン・パークスやジャン＝ミシェル・バスキア、ケヒンデ・ワイリーなどの伝説的および現代のアーティストの作品が多数含まれている。これらのアーティストがもたらす大きな影響と、彼らの歴史的な意義を強調している。ディーン夫妻は、「No Commission」や「Dean’s Choice」モットーにして、アーティストが100%の売上を得られるよう支援し、アーティストが作品の再販利益を分配されるよう促している。
それにしても、彼らのコレクションしているアートたちは、音楽のようにビートの効いた色彩感覚で魅了される。大胆な構図と独特のタッチの数々に、黒人のもつすごいエネルギーを感じた。これほどパワフルな展示はない。

There were several reasons for my visit to New York this time, but among them, I was most looking forward to seeing the art collection exhibition “Giants” by Alicia Keys and her husband, music producer Swizz Beatz (Kaseem Dean) at the Brooklyn Museum. Their Dean Collection is based on the philosophy of “artists supporting artists”. It focuses particularly on artists from the Black Diaspora (people of African descent who were forcibly taken from the African continent and their descendants).

WE NEED TO BE OUR MOST GIANT SELVES: TO THINK OUR MOST GIANT THOUGHTS, EXPRESS OURSELVES IN THE BIGGEST WAY POSSIBLE, AND GIVE OURSELVES PERMISSION TO BE GIANTS.”
‘Giants’ includes works by a number of legendary and contemporary artists, such as Gordon Parks, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kehinde Wiley. It highlights the significant impact these artists have had and their historical significance. The Deans support artists by ensuring that they receive 100% of the sales proceeds, and encourage artists to share the profits from the resale of their works, under the mottoes “No Commission” and “Dean’s Choice”.
Nevertheless, the art they collect is captivating with a sense of color that has a beat like music. I felt the incredible energy of black people in the bold compositions and unique touches. There is no exhibition more powerful than this.
