For a hundred years, this legendary “Action!” has been the starter pistol that has signaled the start of the creative process in Hollywood ever since the legendary words “Action! has been the starter pistol that signals the start of the creative process of cinema ever since those legendary words were barked on movie sets until today.
The various talents, artwork, and props are unleashed in front of the lens with the words “Action! and the shining moment is captured forever.
Regardless of all the preparations, once the starter sounds, what follows is controlled chaos, improvisation, a series of events, with every take having a unique impact on what follows.
In the art world, action painting is similar. Just as the artist informs the canvas with gestures, the canvas informs the artist what the next action or stroke will be.
Just as the words spoken by characters in a movie script or improvised by actors on set are called “dialogue jokes,” so action painting is a “dialogue” (conversation).
I have been an actor for 31 years and a painter for 25 years. I have entered both the worlds of film and art, and each has a positive influence on the other.
I only use materials that I can procure on site. The more remote and exotic the location, the more my desire to create is heightened because my access to color, canvas, and brushes is limited. The search for materials actually becomes part of my “imaginative process.
I believe my art heightens an addictive impulse and an air of danger by creating a situation in which I must create a superior work of art with “what I have,” whether it be film or canvas. It allows me to make bold choices while responding on the fly. I feel like a medic or EMT in the military, prioritizing my response. I oil and bandage deep blue cuts and treat crimson wounds. And the funny thing is, I’m a happy-accident guy.”
