The film “Ribbon” (scheduled for release in 2022) was the world’s first film to be screened at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival on June 12 as a special invitation film in the GALA section. Only a few films were selected for the GALA section out of approximately 500 films screened from all over the world. The world premiere was held in the prestigious section.
Tickets for the three screenings on June 12, 17 and 18 sold out in just 5 minutes after they went on sale!
This result shows the high level of attention paid to Non, who has a large number of fans in Asia.
Before the screening of the film, a video message from director NON was shown, and at the beginning of her speech, she spoke fluent Chinese. The screening of the film started with a warm round of applause. The audience marveled at the special effects that showed the flow of the main character’s emotions through the movement of colorful ribbons. The comical scenes even brought laughter. After the screening, the audience in Shanghai, who were quick to appreciate the passion that Nonon put into this film, applauded and the venue was filled with excitement.

The film is full of refreshing Japanese visual beauty, just like the actor-turned-director Non. The film carefully depicts the trajectory of the lives and relationships of the young people whose lives were forced to change due to the Corona disaster. The film’s depiction of the Corona Vortex is not a heavy theme, but rather, from the young female director’s unique perspective, the charm of the young girls and their bright adolescence are beautifully expressed.
The ribbon is part of the protagonist’s “work” and part of his youth, and it makes the overall atmosphere of the work friendly and tender. So, no matter how bad the world gets, young people don’t give up. A little controversy, a little pushback, a little encouragement …… All of these things are sure to lead young people in the right direction.”
