A new exhibition by Keeyan (Hideki Kimura) has opened at Speedy Gallery in Los Angeles! At the age of 81, he finally made his debut on the global stage.

He and I were disappointed that we could not make it to the Los Angeles opening, but we heard that it was received with great enthusiasm there. I am very happy to hear that!

Exhibition Concept
Born in Osaka in 1942, Hideki Kimura emerged as a prominent music producer, working on events that marked the dawn of rock in Japan and collaborations with Frank Zappa and others.

At the age of 60, however, Kimura underwent a profound transformation and began his journey as an artist. His artistic journey produced more than 180 murals throughout Japan and abroad, and his first solo exhibition in Tokyo at the age of 80 marked an important milestone.

Kimura’s artistic evolution is deeply influenced by his musical roots, which now come to life in his dynamic street art. Instead of a studio, he prefers to paint in the lively energy of a “live” show.

In this exhibition, Kimura presents a thought-provoking concept: those who live on and are sustained by the earth should refrain from arrogance and greed” Where is humanity headed in the face of AI, nuclear power, fossil fuels, and extreme weather caused by human actions?” These are Kimura’s reflections, but he encourages the viewer to interpret and envision them freely and avoids imposing his meaning.

Artist Profile

Born in Izumiotsu City, Osaka in 1942.
Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Design, and lecturer at the same university.
He produced many legendary events as an organizer in the early days of Japanese rock music.

Became an artist at the age of 60. He has created more than 200 murals in Japan and abroad. His life with rock can be seen in his dynamic paintings. Instead of facing the canvas in his studio, he wants to paint “live” in the city. He is a unique artist who advocates ultimate amateurism.

His collected works include “As I Live,” “Mukamonaka,” and “LIVE.”
In 2012, his work was featured in the Japan Tourism Agency’s “JAPAN. Thank You.” campaign, and he was selected for the “23XArt” art project for the TBS news program “NEWS23X. In addition, his work was selected for Takashimaya’s mid-year and year-end gift campaign for three consecutive years.
