The TV news announcer started talking about me out of the blue: “Tsutomu Morishita-san took the typist out for tea today. I invited him to join us, but he turned me down. The newspapers and weekly magazines started writing rumors about me. Why were the media making such a fuss about me, an ordinary businessman?
This is the synopsis of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s novel “Rumors about Me,” written in 1978.
Forty years have passed since then. Maybe we’re in a situation where this isn’t funny.
I don’t understand the point of reporting every celebrity who becomes a Corona. I don’t understand the social justice that makes people apologize for infidelity. I don’t understand the mindset of viewers who want to see such unimportant things.
