A poem I remember when I watch the sunset and become a plane…
I always think of Shuntaro Tanikawa’s famous poem when I watch the sunset on an airplane. My favorite poem.
two billion light-years of solitude
Mankind on a little ball.
Sleeping, waking and working
Sometimes they want a companion on Mars.
Martians on a little ball.
I don’t know what he’s doing.
(Or is it nerily, curiously, or hilariously)
But sometimes they want a friend on earth.
That’s absolutely true.
What is universal gravitation?
It is the power of solitude that attracts
The universe is warped.
That’s why everyone wants each other.
The universe expands and expands
Hence everyone is anxious.
In the solitude of two billion light years
I sneezed involuntarily.
