Announcing the 3rd anniversary of the Speedy Gallery in Los Angeles!!!
Thanks to Ricky from POPKILLER we were first able to open on May 24, 2019 in a fashionable corner of downtown LA. We opened with a powered-up version of the New York exhibit of my friend Britney Tokyo. Over 200 people joined us to celebrate.
The following year, in April 2020, we moved to an art center in Santa Monica called Bergamot (the center boasts 28 galleries).
The space was originally occupied by the Lora Schlesinger Gallery (opened in 1975). With Lora’s retirement, we were able to use the space with furnishings as they were. Divided into five exhibition areas, it was a very unique box.
I immediately applied to the city of Santa Monica, which owned the property, but competitors in London and New York were also seeking to use the place. Thanks to several enthusiastic presentations by our Umi Morikawa, we were able to acquire the location. It is the first gallery in Bergamot to be owned by a Japanese person.
However, as we were making preparations to open, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. We were forced to suspend operations for over a year. However, from the 5th of this past May, galleries have gradually begun to open, and all galleries in LA will be open from June 15th!
This year, we want to curate as energetically as we did in 2019. The initial concept was to introduce Japanese artists to the world. Going forward, however, we would like to handle excellent contemporary art from all over the world, both inside and outside of Japan.
