What is the Difference Between Design & Art? Exhibit KASHIWA SATO, The National Art Center, Roppongi
What is the difference between design and art?
In design, you have corporate clients. Whereas in art, you don’t. If you ask me, in art, you yourself are the client.
The significance of having Kashiwa Sato’s work at the Art Museum is not just about recognizing the excellence of his work; it is about pondering the differences between design and art.
There is a clear-cut goal when it comes to design. You cannot change the end-goal on your own, neither can you just leave the work half done. And that’s why when I consider how freely Kashiwa Sato has been able to express himself under such constraints, I cannot help but marvel at his numerous creative works we encounter in the streets.
I believe it is the duty of contemporary art museums to take on such new initiatives.
